To a new country as a visitor, for a moment in time. To your nation, always? The 2019 edition of OH! Open House focuses on the ubiquitous passport to invite artists and visitors in unpacking themes of identity and citizenship.

A Passport is a Document of Power, Security and Belonging

What can be distilled from the visual language of a passport?
Does the document disrupt or supplement feelings of home and belonging?

The design approach began as an interrogation of the visual language of passports. Fine meshwork that function as security against forgery, lines of running micro-text braided into a background. Images of a country’s iconography, blended into an insistently pleasant gradient.

The visual identity developed aims to draw tension and ambiguity into the picture. In appropriating the same motifs, it poses the paradox: the passport as both gateway and gatekeeper.
